The Naked Civil Servant is a made for tv film about the hardest bastard who ever lived. John Hurt plays a young exhibitionistically homosexual man in 1930s/40s Britain who can’t go to the shops without at least one slur shouted at him, if he’s lucky.
It’s a testament to the sheer willpower of Quentin Crisp (who’s biography it’s based on) to simply be himself in a world that hates him. That world doesn’t deserve him. And it’s funny! So many great lines! I absolutely struck gold in my eternal YouTube search for old TV stuff and I urge you to do the same if you haven’t seen it. It’s timeless and Hurt is incredible.
