Just started reading Elric Of Melnibone for the first time in decades and what strikes me is the incredible use of colour. I’d this memory of it being very grey and monotone, what with it being a big influence on modern grimdark, but EOM is psychedelic in visual tone: the throne carved from a giant ruby; the thousand towers of the city, each its own colour; Cymoril’s blue dress amid a field of blue flowers.

As an intensely visual reader (and a writer who chooses a colour palette when before he begins a novel) I really appreciated it. Moorcock goes out his way to paint this story, to a level most modern fantasy and sf doesn’t, frankly.
More of this kind of thing!
