The Goddess Of Braunston

In a churchyard on the Leicestershire-Rutland border stands a very strange object indeed. Known as The Goddess of Braunston it was discovered in 1920 when builders lifted up a stair and found the other side had a face.

No one is certain of its historicity. Medieval experts are not sure it’s a gargoyle, Norman and Saxon experts make no real claim to it either. A few argue it’s pre-Roman (and neo-pagans occasionally leave offerings before her), but no one is entirely sure.
One day I may have to catch a bus and say hello to this enigmatic laydee. I just think she’s neat.
