There’s a lot of memes nowadays about the blithe serenity and sanity of the 90s/early 2000s and I get it, totally. The world before the social media demon burst forth was, looking back, a more certain place. A place we wished we’d saved as a checkpoint so we could have a crack at things again and get it right this time.

We’re due a movie, series or video game about that. It would catch a public mood. Someone leaps back into the nineties eager to find a lost sanity but also discovers it’s full of a lot more homophobia, misogyny and transphobia than they remembered, far higher crime rates, a casual acceptance of street violence at the weekend, tons of lung cancer and far grubbier pavements and roads full of discarded styrofoam burger boxes (Bet you forgot that bit, eh?).
It’s like any era; mainly awful and full of confusion but with some wonderful bits you take with you into the future.
