Just watched G.I. Samurai (1979) in which a squadron of modern soldiers end up Japan’s Warring States period. It’s like they took every Tokyo schoolboy’s playground game and filmed it with thousands of extras.

There’s something exhilarating in watching a tank blow up waves of medieval soldiers (who just keep on coming!), especially from the movie era before cgi generated armies; that’s a real helicopter hovering just above all those actors as they shoot arrows at it.

It’s overlong and there’s some inappropriate musical choices for some even more inappropriate scenes. But the last forty minutes is electric action movie making. Plus Sonny Chiba stars in it. Also a young Hiroyuki Sanada of recent Shogun fame.
