Umbrellas

Went to see Renoir’s Umbrellas at New Walk Museum today. The first thing that struck me is the young woman has forgotten to bring her brolly. The way she looks at you it’s like she’s hoping you’ll let her hide under yours.

I love the way she and the man are very detailed but the woman in the hat and the child are a little blurry. I think that captures how you look at things in the rain, your eyes focus ahead a little more.

A magnificent portrait of the very ordinary. It made me appreciate people. And when I left the museum I stepped into the painting: it was raining outside in the streets.
